This painting of Romeo & Juliet, 1884, by Frank Bernard Dicksee has been voted the most romantic artwork in Britain. The couple is sharing a kiss after their wedding night & the sad part is that they don’t realize it’s going to be their last kiss.
It’s really a beautiful painting. To some extent, it does make you believe in love. You could feel pure emotion that is missing now. If you’re very young, it might struck you dumb with the feeling of love. I mean you may even think about falling in love. I think I might have looked at it this way when I was a teenager.
The painting hangs in Southampton City Art Gallery & it received 71 per cent votes in the Art Fund survey to mark Valentine’s Day.
Art critic Godfrey Barker said: ‘It creates the impression death is close but love will never die. Romance is a dream that still lives in the hearts of millions.’
Experts believe the painting is popular to this day as we, human, still crave for ‘passion & faithfulness.’ I totally agree with them. We always crave for what is lacking & this kind of loyalty & passionate love is beyond our reach.
