Matilda's horned viper – new snake specie discovered in Tanzania

A new species of brightly coloured snake has been found in a remote area of Tanzania in East Africa.

The striking black-and-yellow snake is just over two feet long and has horn-like scales above its eyes. It was described in a December issue of the journal Zootaxa.

Since the snake’s habitat is threatened by human development & other factors, the exact location of the new specie is being kept a secret.

The authors of the study in Zootaxa expect the viper will be classified as a critically endangered species.

They have also collected 11 snakes for a captive breeding program.
