Well I don’t know if it’s a loaded question & I also don’t care much about this issue. But there’s one woman Nicole Weider who has serious problems. She’s actually a reader-turned-mother something & she’s trying hard to impose her moral codes on everyone else. Now that is not acceptable.
These are the views of Weider who started a Change.org petition against Cosmopolitan in August 2011:
“As a former reader of the magazine, I happened to pick up an issue and was reading it and was completely shocked at how pornographic and explicit the content had become. I immediately thought of my young teenage brothers and it horrified me to think that they and their friends could be reading this material, and the damage it would do to them if they did.So I decided to do something about it.”
She wants the magazine to be sold in a non-transparent wrapper & nobody under the age of 18 should see the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine on newsstands or at their grocery stores, and that no one under 18 should be able to buy the top-selling title.
I guess Weider has seen nothing on the net :P And honestly, she has no idea as to what kids check out on the internet. She only browses magazines at grocery stores & supermarkets.
Moreover, the petition has now 10,000 signatures now. She has been receiving hundreds of messages of support through her website from girls as young as 11.
"They write me letters detailing how they've tried the sexual tips written about in Cosmo, only to get their hearts broken, or worse - getting pregnant or catching an STD," she said. "The obvious damage it could be doing is the girls getting STD's at a young age, pregnancy and bullying. But let's not forget other behaviors Cosmo displays in a glamorous package to young girls, such as sexting nude pictures of yourself (November 2011) and suggesting that it is ‘normal' if your boyfriend cheats on you (December 2011)."
There I can’t disagree with her but banning the magazine would not solve the problem. These young girls will still indulge in all the illegal acts whether they have access to the magazine or not. Weider certainly lives in another world or rather another alien planet. I suppose she doesn’t know either that sexting is quite an acceptable thing amongst teenagers.
I sign all kinds of petition against animal cruelty but I won’t be signing this one. You don’t have to try out tips in Cosmo magazine or to sleep with someone or to get pregnant to have a broken heart. You can have it without tasting all of that & it still hurts.
