Very nicely sung by Lata! Kaifi Azmi wrote brilliant lyrics that touch your heart & not just that, it forces you to think.
Pakeezah was released in 1972 & shortly, after the release, Meena Kumari died. As it is, she was very ill when she resumed working in the movie. It nearly took 14 years to shoot the movie. Actually it was written, directed & produced by Kamal Amrohi. Meena Kumari was married to him when they started off the film but it couldn't be completed owing to the differences between the two of them. Nargis & Sunil Dutt, however, convinced Meena Kumar to complete the film. But she was so ill that in most of the scenes she was seen sitting & Padma Khanna was used as a body double in dance sequences.
I don't have to think too hard in this one. My favourite lines are:
'Shabe intezaar aakhir kabhi hogi muqtasar bhi
Yeh chiraag bujh rahe hain meray saath jalte jalte.'
The entire song is very painful. 'Vahin thamke rahe gayi hai, meri raat dhalte dhalte.'
A thing that might not mean anything to the other person has been a ray of hope for someone...Hope & waiting are weird things. One lifts you up & the other kills you. Delays can be so devastating.
