Siku – the adorable polar bear cub

Sorry this is a little stale news but it’s worth sharing. 27th February happens to be International Polar Bear Day.

A young polar bear named Siku was born last November at Denmark's Scandinavian Wildlife Park. Ever since he was introduced to the public, he became an internet sensation with his own web & Facebook pages.

Since webcam has been installed in his playground, animal lovers can watch the cub grow up online. This project is called Siku Cam. Its creators hope to capitalize on Siku's charm as a way of raising public awareness of the plight facing Arctic species from climate change.

“We’re launching the Siku Cam on International Polar Bear Day, which is a day of action on climate change,” says Robert Buchanan, president of Polar Bears International, via Mother Nature Network. “Our goal with the Siku Cam is for people to fall in love with this little cub and become inspired to reduce their carbon footprint to help save arctic sea ice.”

Since Siku is an orphaned polar bear, his main handler Frank Vigh-Larsen is doing his best to ensure his survival.

“It takes a lot of patience, it takes away your sleep, but it gives back a fantastic opportunity to see this little thing grow up,” said Vigh-Larsen.

Just like Knut, Siku too has drawn worldwide attention & people have gone nuts over him. But Vigh- Larsen said Siku “will grow up in a different environment” than Knut. Well we just hope so. It was really saddening when Knut died at such a tender age.
