Equinox controversial ads

The story goes something like this...Terry Richardson has shot a few recent campaigns for Equinox. It’s a luxury gym headquartered in Manhattan. And you won’t believe it but people are angry cause the models are too thin. These skinny models, according to them, just don’t seem like people who could survive even an average class at Equinox. They actually want to see strong, fit women with muscles.

However now, the gym chain has responded, & they have defended Richardson’s photos. Equinox’s executive creative director Bianca Kosoy said:

“Our campaigns exist at the intersection between fitness and fashion; they are intended to be thought provoking and to generate discussion through their deliberate synthesis of personal motivation and high fashion photography.”

They have responded but I guess it would have been better if they didn’t say anything. This doesn’t make for a very smart response. Nevertheless mad people are ever ready to yell whenever they get an opportunity. Ads are ads. They should be taken as ads. I think Terry Richardson did a good job. I don’t find it sexy, but it’s better than what he does. And no I don’t find these ads gratuitously porny or fairly boring. It’s a bit trashy, after all we know who is the photographer. But yes something is lacking. I really don’t know what.
