The Lost Grey Monkey

An 'extinct' large, grey monkey has been rediscovered in the rainforest of Borneo by scientists.

One of the rarest and least known primates in the world, Miller's Grizzled Langur, has been found alive - it was thought the species had been wiped out in 2004.

The species has a distinctive dark face and white, Dracula-esque 'collar' of fur.

Forests where the monkeys once lived had been destroyed by fires, human encroachment and conversion of land for agriculture and mining.

With virtually no photographs of the grizzled langurs in existence, it was a bit of a challenge to confirm.

"It's indeed a highly enigmatic species," said Erik Meijaard, a conservation scientist.

In the past they were hunted to near extinction for their meat and bezoar "stones," he said.
