Angelina Jolie has enraged a couple of people in Bosnia, thanks to her first movie ‘In the Land of Blood and Honey’ as director. It’s a story of love & war, which is set during the Balkan conflict, & that of course is a sensitive issue for many in Bosnia. War is always an ugly affair. Around 200,000 people died during this war.
The leader of a Bosnian Serb prisoners group considers it to be a one side depiction of cruelty & wants the movie to be banned from the country’s Serbian areas.
Moreover, Croatian journalist Josip Knežević aka James J. Braddock has also sued Angelina Jolie for stealing his story. He accuses Angelina Jolie of stealing major chunks from his book ‘The Soul Shattering’ that he wrote in 2007. However, Jolie dismisses his claim:
"It happens on almost every film. There are many books and documentaries that I did pull from such as work by journalists Peter Maas and Tom Gjelten. It's a combination of many people's stories. But that particular book I've never seen".
There were also rumors that this movie was about a real Bosnian woman who falls in love with her Serbian rapist. Naturally Bosnian women protested against it. It seems too many people have been pissed off at different times so far as the making of In the name of Blood & Honey is concerned.
The film opens in the US this Friday i.e. 23rd December. It revolves around the relationship between a Muslim woman artist named Ajla and Serbian army officer Danijel. They were romantically involved before the outbreak of war in April 1992. They get reunited again in the Serbian internment camp where the woman was a captive.
The idea of the movie occurred to Jolie when she visited Bosnia and Herzegovina as a U.N. goodwill ambassador. She felt responsible to learn more about the conflict. In an interview, she said "This was, you know, the worst genocide since World War II in Europe ... What were we all doing? And did we do enough? And why do we not speak about this enough?”
She also believes the movie would be hard to watch.
"It's a very hard conflict to understand and region to completely understand. And I think it's very hard to watch intentionally. It's brutal, it shows brutality and we hope it gives people an authentic feel to be inside of something that is uncomfortable."
We wish Angelina Jolie all the best for her upcoming film. And she’s right we didn’t do anything. On top of it, we don’t even want to talk about it either. As if ignoring atrocities would make them disappear! That speaks volumes about the level of hypocrisy.
Angelina Jolie is the person who just doesn’t say big, big things, but unlike others, she has done lots & lots of things for those who need help. In fact, while I was writing about this movie, some malicious, judgmental comments of Talat Hussein about Angelina Jolie popped up on my radar. Even to this day I can’t understand why he wanted Angelina Jolie to be punished in that brutal manner & that too infinite times. What the hell was he thinking? She came here & she wrote a report. You could find faults with the report. I really don’t see the point of judging her character. Why drag her personal sexy life? And she’s a non-Muslim, so there was no need to talk about rajm in the 1st place, which is basically a Jewish punishment but I guess Talat Hussein did not know it. My last paragraph is of course beside the point but I do find it sickening when people unjustly criticize & judge others just because they are not impressive enough themselves.
