This is Casper - the commuting cat. He looks a lot like my cat Danny. In fact one of my friends had a cat named Tom who was exactly like him.
Dodger is the cat who has become well known at Bridport bus station. He’s 15 year old & he has been named after one of the characters from Charles Dickens’s novel Oliver Twist. Some of the drivers even bring food for him as he’s quite a regular customer. However, drivers have been discouraged to give him food as he has an owner & since he’s an old cat, so he can get a free ride anywhere around the country.
Owner Fee Jeanes, of West Street, said: “He loves it there because there are lots of people around and they all drop their sandwiches and pork pies. The drivers buy cat food for him and he sits on people’s laps. Sometimes he just sits in the middle of the road and waits for the bus to turn up. He is down there all day and I have to go out in the night to make sure he is ok.”
What I find dangerous is that sometimes he just sits in the middle of the road waiting for the bus. In fact, it’s quite a dangerous hobby. Speaking of which reminds me of Casper. He was another kitty in England who attracted world-wide media attention when he became a regular user of a Devon bus service but sadly he died in January 2010 when he was hit by a car. He was picked up from a rescue home in 2002 & the owner Susan Finden named him after Casper the Friendly Ghost. He was quite an adventurous & smart cat. He did this for four years. His owner couldn’t understand what Casper was up to till a bus driver let her into the secret of Casper’s traveling.
"I couldn't believe it at first, but it explains a lot. He loves people and we have a bus stop right outside our house so that must be how he got started – just following everyone on," she said at the time, said Susan.
Anyhow, you can’t force your cat to stay at home if he has acquired this kind of hobby. They say cats are not that intelligent. I believe time & again they have proved those idiots wrong. However, these adventures are dangerous. Casper was hit by a taxi…even though everyone in that area knew about him. I just hope Dodger has a long life & he doesn’t have to face any reckless driver.
