Wati – the girl who survived after being swept away in tsunami

Wati who is 15 year old now is an Indonesian & she was presumed dead after being swept away in 2004 tsunami. Anyway, she has been reunited with her family after seven long years. No one knows what happened to Wati in those years though.

Everyone thought she drowned as she lost grip of her mother when her home village Ujong Baroh on the island of Sumatra was hit by the tsunami. In fact Aceh was one of the worst hit places in the Indonesian tsunami, losing 168,000 people out of a global total of 230,000 dead. The family did search for the girl but couldn’t find her anywhere.

But lately she was seen sitting alone in a coffee bar & when she was questioned, she said that she was trying to find her home. She only remembered the name of her grandfather Ibrahim. Other than that she couldn’t recall any relatives’ names. In fact she didn’t even remember if Ibrahim was her grandfather. And this has been sheer luck as her grandfather was there & he suspected that this girl could be his grandchild. He immediately informed her parents, Yusniar and Yusuf, who confirmed that the dark-skinned Wati was their daughter from a distinctive mole and a small scar on her elbow that she got when she was just six year old.

This is indeed one happy story but when you look closely at Wati, you could see so much sadness. In fact you don’t even have to look that closely, it’s obvious that this girl has seen pretty bad times. Now she is with her family, so I just hope things get better for her.
