Rutgers suicide

I read this story yesterday & I’m really pissed off that Dharun Ravi has been jailed for just 30 days. This guy secretly made a film of his gay room-mate while he was having sex with another man in his dormitory at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Ravi also posted mocking comments about this entire episode on twitter. After three days, Tyler Clementi killed himself by jumping from the George Washington Bridge. Although Ravi even deleted those tweets later on, but the damage was done. The thing is…why did Ravi delete those comments when he was not guilty?

What Ravi did was a hate crime. I don’t think there’s any other word for it. What was his problem? Even if his room-mate was gay, he could have asked to change the room but he went ahead & made this cheap film & later on bullied the guy. You can imagine it must be pure torture to have the kind of room-mate who has issues with whom you’re sleeping with. He must have said such mean things to Tyler while he was alive. He deleted the tweet & so there is no evidence.

I believe this punishment for 30 days is too lenient. Ravi may not have pushed Clementi but he triggered a chain of reactions. Posting such nasty stuff online can have a devastating effect on the victim. Yes he cannot be directly blamed for the suicide, but he had no right to play havoc with someone’s life.

James Clementi blamed Ravi's bullying for his brother's death saying: "He walked into a viper's nest ... with Dharun Ravi as his room-mate, my brother never stood a chance."

Jane Clementi, the victim's mother, did not refer to Ravi by name during her statement referring to him as "the room-mate" and "the defendant".

She called him "cold and vicious ... malicious and evil".

Although Ravi’s father is saying that he has not been raised to hate gays, but what was the meaning of making that kind of video & bullying a person online. Surely something was wrong somewhere. Maybe he doesn’t know his son that well. Parents of culprits & criminals always say their kids are innocent & if everyone is innocent, how come we have such a maddening world where people have issues with someone else's private life & personal choices?

Cyber-bullying is a serious crime & I don’t think 30 days is enough to teach this guy any lesson. He might have done all this in fun, but another person committed suicide.

I’m not saying he ought to be tried for murder, but he must be given a harsh punishment for invading someone’s privacy & then harassing him online.

I’m also amazed at people who are sympathizing with Ravi. Would they ask the judge to be more lenient with the one who instigated the horrible chain of events if their own kid commits suicide? I don't think so. And I don't even think is a scapegoat. He needs to be punished for mentally abusing, harassing, & bullying a person while he was alive.

A guy made a sex video & then posted lots of crap about him on tweeter. That in itself is enough to drive anyone crazy. Besides others too must be teasing.
