The worth of life

The other day my friend shared a picture of an infant thrown in a trash can. I have written on such topics & we all know there is just no way of stopping just cruel people from throwing babies in garbage sites where strays harm them & in many cases, these people have even thrown acid on the babies.

A baby just doesn’t arrive in this world all by itself, but that has never been that important. People who use words such illegitimate & impure for beings, I just have one thing to say about them: it’s their narrow way of thinking which is illegitimate & impure. I think questions such as how could humans be so cruel & inhuman are useless, cause these people will not change & I don’t think they have any regret for treating life as dirt.

Well it’s a known fact that babies are deserted everywhere in the world. Although there are places where you could leave infants, in spite of that, they are being killed & thrown in the trash. I think both men & women, & the society itself are responsible for this brutality committed in the name of keeping their so-called honour. In some cases, these kids are illegitimate & in some cases, they don’t want baby girls, so they discard them.

I admire Edhi & his wife for providing shelter for such babies. Even though clerics have issues with what they are doing for these kids, they continue to help out. However, I don’t like how Mrs. Sattar Edhi doesn’t let mothers see their babies once they are delivered. She tells them they are dead. If a woman comes over to Edhi centre, at least she doesn’t want to kill the baby & she wants him to have a better future, but Mrs. Edhi doesn’t ever show them the face of the baby & yet she didn’t have any problem admitting this on TV. As if those mothers were not watching her interview! It’s like she’s judging all those women. Or does she really care that a mother would not forget the child?

It’s not necessary that a woman has to have an illicit relationship with a man to produce the baby. She could have been raped as well. She could have been sexually abused by a family member. And even if she slept with a guy out of wedlock, who the hell is Mrs. Sattar to judge her!!! Killing babies in broad day is a norm in sick societies. We need to morally support those women…at least they take some step to protect the child.

A friend of mine was saying that Mrs. Sattar is not educated; maybe she meant something else & she said it crudely. Well I don’t know about that. I saw her being extremely excited when singer Hadiqa adopted a child. There is no guarantee either that a celebrity will make an awesome parent. Anyhow, what Edhi & his wife are doing is commendable. People in this country do not even have time to talk about such babies.

The incident that I have never been able to forget is how a baby was left on the stairs of a mosque & on the order of Imam sahab, he was stoned to death. It happened in Karachi few years ago. Who was the 1st one to cast the stone & who was the 2nd one – that is not important. The infant was innocent as compared to all those judgmental monsters who went to mosque to pray that particular day & then murdered an innocent child. Not a single religion preaches to kill a child.

The other case that also bothers me to this day is about a young girl who was sexually abused by her own father for years & her mother kept mum all the while. When she got pregnant, her father & mother decided that the baby ought to be destroyed. She was not in favor of abortion & yet she was forced to. She wanted the baby & she was not allowed that option. Do you think it’s fair? I don’t.

How can you possibly judge such mothers? That’s my question. I don’t think every woman wants to get rid of the baby. Yeah, most of them don’t have the courage to face this society. I admit that some women don’t give a damn; they just want to get rid of the child. We’ve read too many horrifying stories in which mothers have murdered or abandoned their legitimate kids.

When I was young, I used to wonder how could anyone harm a part of herself & baby is actually a part of you but now I don’t. Women have given ample evidence that they can stoop down to any level. Sometimes they even leave behind men. But the society as a whole is responsible for babies being killed. We are intolerant & incapable of granting justice. A baby has the right to live but that right is snatched by others every day. It may be just another day for you, but every day an innocent child is robbed of his basic right to breathe.

In the movie Kya Kehna, Preity Zinta very rightly said that they wanted her to kill the child as if there was no difference between a rotten or cracked tooth with cavity & her child.

I'm sorry to say but we are a part of a society where the worth of life is even less than a cracked tooth. We are so bogged down in ignorance & error.
