Rescue teams helped thousands of pets displaced by Japan's catastrophic earthquake and tsunami last year. However, it’s feared that the long term effect of being exposed to nuclear radiation on wildlife cannot be all that nice.
There have been reports about a considerable drop in bird populations around the disabled Fukushima reactor. Moreover, it also has shown negative impact on birds during the main breeding season.
Professor Timothy Mousseau from the University of South Carolina will be conducting a research along with his team on the impact of radiation exposure on wild animals and plants in the Fukushima area. The researchers are also trying to find out the impact of the disaster on flora & fauna. The study is expected to be published in March.
